Leading Virtually – Thoughts on Telework

Now that a shutdown has been diverted (for the time being), let’s get back to business. Specifically, how is your agency implementing the telework initiative and how are managers leading their employees virtually.  I recently came across this interesting video on GovLoop that stresses the importance and necessity of allowing government employees to work from a virtual location.  This is such a vital topic that GovLoop has a dedicated group that allows for discussions, article postings, and blog submissions on this issue.

Globalization, technology, work-life balance, and outsourcing have all created a workplace where leaders rarely see the individuals they lead, and often struggle to use the skills of a Situational Leader (Diagnosis, flexibility, and Partnering for Performance) without face-to-face contact. With so many leaders managing team members who are working in different time zones, countries, and continents, or even just in different locations in the same city, there is an ever increasing need for people who don’t see each other frequently to figure out how to work better together.
